Alongside the defenders to be called up are West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

They replace Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, and Roma forward Tammy Abraham.

For Mitchell and Walker-Peters though, it is a very proud moment who will hope to receive their first senior caps.

England are taking on Switzerland on Saturday before hosting the Ivory Coast on March. Both games are being held at Wembley Stadium.

After breaking through to the Palace team last season, Mitchell has gone one step further this season and has become a key figure in Patrick Viera’s team.

He is yet to miss a minute of Premier League football this season having started all 29 games so far helping Palace keep eight clean sheets.

And because of that consistency, he has now been rewarded by Southgate.

Walker-Peters has also fared very well for the south coast side under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The former Tottenham defender has started in 20 of 29 league games, scoring once and providing two assists.

What is an even more impressive is that he’s predominantly played at left-back despite being right-footed.

It’s also the final step for Walker-Peters in the England set up having featured for the Three Lions at all junior levels.
