Gabby Agbonlahor apologises to Arsenal fans and backtracks on celebration argument after being ‘put in his place’ by Laura Woods

Well, that escalated quickly.

Laura Woods and her fellow Arsenal fans can celebrate all they like after a hard-earned victory over Gabby Agbonlahor was confirmed on Tuesday.

The Aston Villa legend has officially admitted defeat after calling the celebration police on the Gunners following their 1-0 win over his former side.

“The way they celebrated at the end of the game was like they’d won the Champions League, not qualified for it,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT on Sunday.

“I know it was a great result but the scenes, the players, and we were right behind the fans, it was like they’d won the league, not beaten Aston Villa, a team that they should be beating.

“I think they did overdo the celebrations.”

Agbonlahor’s argument went through the ringer on social media – but the final nail in the coffin was delivered by talkSPORT’s Breakfast presenter Woods.

She hit back: “You have to be able to celebrate. You have to be able to go to a game and I love that they celebrated. That’s what Arsenal is all about now, that unified presence.

“But Gabby, don’t listen to me, listen to your own argument…”

She then played a clip of the ex-forward praising Villa boss Steven Gerrard for his celebrating his first victory at the club like a cup final, insisting ‘that’s what the fans want to see’.

Dropping the mic, Woods added: “Well done Gabby for undoing your own argument before you’d even made it!”

But fair play to Agbonlahor – he could’ve doubled-down, he could’ve dug deeper but, instead, he took the loss.

“Yes, I’ve seen Laura’s comments – and she’s spot on,” he told talkSPORT on Tuesday.

“Laura puts me in my place a lot and this is why she’s getting awards – because she’s a top presenter.

“I was very bitter after the game. Where I was watching the game from the BT Sport studio, I could see the Arsenal fans all game.

“And seeing them celebrating after the game, I think it was a bit of jealousy.

“So I take that comment back and I apologise to Arsenal fans. Their celebrations were fine and I’m sure they will get that top-four position.

“But Jamie O’Hara, pipe down!”

It ends a thoroughly enjoyable debacle for everyone except Agbonlahor – and ex-Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell loved every second of the argument’s slow demise.

Speaking to Woods after Agbonlahor’s apology, the Premier League icon said: “I loved the way you led him down the path, nice and easy, then opened the manhole cover and dropped him down there!

“I’m not getting into any arguments with Laura! He’s upset because Arsenal won the game, the celebration is the celebration.

“But sometimes, as a pundit, you’ve got to be careful what you say, because what you’ve said in the past can come back to haunt you.”
